What is a 301 redirect and when do I need one?

A 301 is a permanent redirect: it sends anyone (and any search engine) who visits an old URL to a new one, and it passes almost all of the old page's ranking value to the new page. Use 301s whenever you change a URL, restructure your site, or move to a new domain — otherwise you get 404 errors and lose the rankings and links you'd built.

How do I add 301 redirects to my site?

It depends on your host. On Cloudflare Pages you list them in a _redirects file; on Apache you add Redirect rules to .htaccess; on Nginx you add rewrite rules to your server block.
